On the edge of the Rotterdam city center, BPD is developing a special residential tower, the Family Scraper de Maasbode.
The award-winning design of the 70-meter-high tower with 3-storey homes was created by Bergen Kolpa Architecten.
Lichtvormgevers developed the contextual light design, in which the incoming daylight is drawn into the building by means of artificial light. This creates natural-feeling public spaces in the building, which makes people feel attracted to use the common areas.
There is an inner street between the 3-storey houses. This street is closed at the top by the street above. During the day, daylight is not able to penetrate far enough into the building. The advanced artificial lighting installation softens the transitions between light and shadow during the day. In the evening the light adjusts and cozy inner-city streets are created. At night, a serene environment is created by imitating incoming moonlight.
