Terra Maris

_

Terra Maris (literally: land of the sea) is a museum in Oostkapelle, Zeeland. The museum is located in the old orangery of Westhove Castle and is surrounded by a beautiful castle garden. The estate is part of the nature reserve De Manteling van Walcheren.

The museum teaches visitors about the nature and history of the Zeeland landscape and shows how the landscape has shaped land reclamation and villages in the province over the centuries. Visitors can, for example, experience life in the Oosterschelde through one of the sea aquariums or use a VR headset to get an impression of the drowned land of Saefthinge. The exhibitions are both educational and interactive, making for an enjoyable outing, also for children.

In 2006, at the request of the museum, Lichtvormgevers was invited to shed its light on the exhibitions. Above the museum’s walking routes hangs a profile with built-in spotlights. These spotlights can be tilted within their casings to direct light wherever needed. Since the profile is positioned high above the visitors, there is no glare, ensuring a comfortable experience of the exhibition.
